Are lab diamonds real diamonds? Do lab made diamonds pass the diamond tester? What is the difference between lab-grown and natural diamonds? Read and find out!
As you research diamonds, you may notice information about lab-grown diamonds vs real or naturally formed diamonds. There are people who may refer to lab-grown diamonds as fake diamonds, simulants or imitations, however, you should know that this is not true.
The lab-made diamonds are physically and chemically the same as a real diamond created by the geological processes of nature. There are other types of diamonds – moissanite or cubic zirconia which look similar to diamonds but they have totally different physical and chemical properties.
The lab-grown diamonds are grown in special laboratory conditions that reproduce the natural growing environment of the Earth or high temperature and high pressure. These diamonds have the same crystal structure, chemical composition, physical and optical properties of natural diamonds. They are not synthetic diamonds as their chemical properties is that of real diamonds and they exhibit the same scintillation, fire, and sparkle as natural diamonds.
What is the difference between real diamonds and lab diamond jewelry?
There are some differences, however, you won’t be able to find many of them as they are not visible to a naked eye, unless you are a professional gemologist or jeweler.
Almost all diamonds, lab-created and organic alike, have certain inclusions that affect their clarity. Every certified diamond gets a specific clarity grade by the AGS or GIA. These grades tell how noticeable and large the diamond inclusions really are.
Another obvious difference is that lab-made diamonds are grown in a metal solution and they have metallic inclusions which can be noticed with 10x magnification. The metallic inclusions don’t occur in real or natural diamonds. The organic diamonds have inclusions such as crystals, feathers, clouds, and pinpoints that are caused by different elements and volcanic eruptions. Only the rarest diamonds survive in a perfect condition, with no inclusions at all.
Experts believe that lab-made diamonds are real diamonds because of their properties. So, yes, to answer the question – lab made diamonds definitely pass the diamond test.
